Look: Blackish brown, almost opaque. Tan-brown head with good lacing.
Smell: Sweet grapefruit and pine. Toasted malt.
Taste: Citrus, grapefruit sweetness up front. Toasted, caramel malt in the middle. Finish is bitter hops and slightly smoky dark chocolate. Interesting and well-balanced flavors.
Feel: Thin- to medium-bodied, creamy. Low carbonation.
Overall: Delicious, great aroma, great beer!

This is an odd one, bought on a recent trip,to Cincinnati.

I definitely like black IPAs and NE IPAs. This beer is a bit of both, maybe more back IPA than NE. Nice roastiness and some citrus in both smells nd taste. Nice looking beer, dark color with good head and lacing. I would be interested in having more of these black NE IPAs.

Adders' notes: Front of the can, under the name, it's described as a "New England Style IPA" - not a Black IPA. Though below that is the phrase "Dark and Juicy Black India Pale Ale." I entered this as a NE IPA, not a Black IPA, though it could've gone either way.

A: Consumed on January 31, 2019. Poured from the can (no freshness dating, though there's a smudged "12" on the underside of the can, so maybe it was canned in December. . .) into a Piraat tulip/snifter-type glass. Body is black - not brown, black - with a 1-finger khaki/light-tan head that leaves behind good foamy lacing.

S: Odd mix - some roastiness, some char, some pine, some faint citrusy juiciness.

T: Taste decidedly leans toward the Black IPA side of the spectrum: modest char, hint of ash/smoke, slight bit of pine needles. Finishes with a roasty bitterness, but with a faint juiciness on the back sides of the tongue. Not "big" enough in flavor, frankly.

M: Call it lighter side of medium in heft, with a thinnish feel to it. The juiciness is there - it's pretty low in carbonation - but it's tough to find it with all the roasty, Black IPA characteristics taking center stage.

O: In hindsight, I think this attempt at a hybrid NE-style Black IPA would be better described as a Black IPA rather than a NE-style IPA as I entered it; so it goes. . . . Overall, this is nothing earth-shattering, but it's pretty good. Think going into it as if it's a Black IPA and I don't think you'll be disappointed - and may be pleasantly surprised given the smoother, juicy feel.
