Typically I like to review a beer while drinking it, but since the last review was in 2006 and I had this beer not more than 2 hours ago at the Kaleidoscope Pizzeria in Medford, OR I thought an update seemed appropriate.

Out of the tap this beer poured a brick red with a slight refracting haze. A thin white head faded to lacing shortly after being served. The aroma was moderate to light, but with an unmistakeable focus of grapefruit rind. There was also an accompanying sweet malt aroma with some fruity esters, such as pear, showing a presence.

Flavor represented a citrusy bitter hop bite with again, unmistakeable grapefruit on the tongue. The hop bitterness wasn't overpowering and gave way to a caramelized and light honey barley presence. The finnish is sweet and clean with a little hop bitterness still holding on but it's not drying or otherwise tannic. As the beer warms these flavors and aromas seem to blend more and become less distinguishing.

Mouthfeel is medium to light with light carbonation.

This is a nice example and interpretation of an American IPA with a color and malt profile not often found in the style. Definitely worth seeking out, though if you're looking for a hop explosion you won't necessarily find it here. This is a nicely balanced bitter and caramel sweet IPA.

I'd had Redback years ago in Portland, back when Walkabout still distributed to the Willamette markets. But drinking it recently in Medford revealed greater nuance and appreciation. Redback enjoys a predominantly malty sweetness with a light but refreshing hop aroma of brief duration. It is 24-carat hazed gold with mid- to low carbonation and presents with sensuous, widespread lace and a simple ease of appreciation.

The overall hop load would seem to be a bit low however, and I can't help but wonder if the current hop crunch has resulted in a newer scaled back model. My notes from three years ago certainly suggest that this beer was once overabundant with hops. Redback is balanced with adequate bittering. But more hop flavor and aroma would carry it further as an IPA.
