Our latest collaboration beer, brewed with friends at The Virginia Beer Company. This Imperial Brown was brewed with oatmeal, maple syrup, and local coffee from Java Vino as well as Aromas from Williamsburg VA. This is a rich beer, singing with roasted coffee with a mouthfeel that allows it to linger and please.

This beer was brewed at Twain's in Nov. 2014 as a collaboration with a brewery-in-planning in Williamsburg, VA called The Virginia Beer Company. The brewmaster from Virginia Beer Co. and the head brewer at Twain's were colleagues from their respective brewing days in the Atlanta area.

According to Jonathan (Virginia Beer Co.) & Chase (Twain's), the collab was billed as a true Williamsburg/Atlanta collaboration. The beer is an Imperial Brown Ale featuring oats, maple syrup, and two types of coffee; beans from Aromas World in Williamsburg added on the hot side and beans from JavaVino in Atlanta added on the cold side.

The beer looked the part of a double brown, with a dark, almost mahogany body and lighter head. The smell of aromatic coffee and sweet maple syrup dominate the nose. The first sip is well set up by the look and aroma of the beer. The oats help to complete a full-bodied beer, and the complexity of the syrup and coffee combination masks the high ABV. Slight coffee bitterness at first taste that is quickly finished off by the combination of the malt character and maple syrup, providing a lingering sweetness on the finish.

A great collaboration and a unique take on a big brown ale, put together by two brewers who clearly enjoyed working together. Wish it was distributed outside the brewpub!
