What the heck? The label says "Angliskiy Ale Pilsner." The back describes this brew as top fermented, then goes on to say: "Pure taste of ale in the style of Bavarian beer." Bavaria is not exactly known for its pilsners, and this ain't no Bavarian wheat. Also ain't no Bavarian Helles. Well, fine, we'll let that go.
Comes in a 1liter brown plastic bottle. Sugar is an ingredient (oh, yeah, in accordance with Bavarian tradition...). Best before 4/20/04, I opened it on 11/21/03. Label says the beer is bottle fermented. Like most pilsners - NOT.
Anyway, poured a slightly cloudy (it is unfiltered) light gold under a very thin white head that fades quickly. The nose is quite fruity, reminiscent of some light Belgian ales. The mouth is light and prickly. The flavor is sweet and fruity, plums mostly, rather like a fruit soda. There's very little malt, but I must confess that there is a mild hoppy bite in the aftertaste. Nevertheless, fruit dominates throughout.
To paraphrase the best line from a U.S. political debate in the last 20 years: I know pilsners. Pilsners are my friends. You are no pilsner.
