As our third 16oz DIPA can release, we were compelled to obey the ‘Rule Of Three’ by triple dry hopping with three varieties of hops: Centennial hops, Citra Lupulin Powder, and Simcoe Lupulin Powder. The trio results in a golden balance between citrus & passion fruit, earthiness & pine, and berry & melon. Would order multiple pints, probably like 3.

Having been CANspired by @jackHorzempa to make the shift to DuClaw for New DelMarVa (+ DC) Beer Sunday (Week 778), The CANQuest (tm) is delving as deeply as the Marianas Trench in terms of my backlog. I s**t you not - once into DuClaw, I am going to be there for a LONG while!

From the CAN: "Brewed and CANned by DuClaw Brewing Co. Baltimore, Maryland"; "Dry Hopped 3x Dry Hopped"; "Double IPA Ale"; "Craft Be Cherished, Rules Be Damned."; "The Rule of Three [-] In the world of art, music, and literature the number 3 is significant. This rule holds true when crafting beer as well. It compelled us to approach our 3rd DIPA 16oz can release with guided intention. 3 components: Centennial hops along with Citra and Simcoe Lupulin Powder are combined in 3 dry-hop additions. The result is a piney resoinous brew with tropical flavor notes that shine through creating balance and complexity. 'The Rule Of Three’ showed us the way, and we followed."

I was fully ready for the Crack! of the vent & the subseCANt Glug after transcribing all of the above! Following that, I CANmenced a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. I was heartened by the quick formation of two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with very good retention. Color was a gorgeous Golden-Amber, forcing The Gelt Gang of Midas, Croesus & Mammon to slowly rise off of my living room couch & limp into the kitchen for a taste. Poor fellows! They have been encamped here since Friday for (mostly) televised hockey, but now we have the NFC Championship game on & they are unable to break away. Nose was mighty hoppy, but it was difficult for me to parse which hop strains were being used. Hmm. Mouthfeel was full and dense, like a dollop had been scooped into my mouth & onto my tongue. Mmm. I let it roll around, warming as it did so, but I was still not getting a solid handle on the hops. They were less bitter than simply mellow, which was not a bad thing at this point. My hops jones was long-ago satiated today & this was like hops tea. Do not scoff! I have had hops tea many times & it is a mellow, soothing drink, much akin to this beer. Finish was dry, but mellow, very mellow, man. YMMV.

Very dry malty taste with creamy feel. It is triple dry hopped double ipa. For 8.8 percent acohol its not too acohol tasting.

Tastes of citrus and pine notes. Also resinous

Can says centennial hops.

Hazy gold look with thick head and good lacing.

DuClaw Brewing Co. "The Rule of Three"
16 fl. oz. can coded "#3BETTER 1/9/19 11:51:54"
$2.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: This is a double IPA with Centennial, Citra, and Simcoe used in three separate dry-hopping additions. Interesting. But if it's the rule of threes shouldn't it be a triple IPA? Kidding. It's poured a very hazy golden-orange body beneath a full head of densely foamy white. It looks great if you don't mind the haze. The aroma is fruity with apricot bumped up by the sweet malt from underneath, a light generic citrus, and some earthiness and spice. On to the taste... that sweet malt remains, bready and a touch biscuity, but it's not overdone as it can be in some double IPAs. The solid bitterness balances it nicely. The hops remain similar but with some added passion fruit, and sweet lemon zest and grapefruit. Ahhh, maybe some berry and apple as well. It's nice, and in my opinion, perfectly balanced for a double IPA. In the mouth it's medium-full in body and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled median carbonation. Looking back, the head held fairly well and I've still got a nice collar and some very thin foam covering about a third of the surface, but the lacing, particularly the initial lacing, is quite nice. So to sum it all up, this is a very nicely done double IPA that might not live up to the expectations of a 'triple hopped' ale because that's not exactly what it is - but it is great as it is! Poured into a 16 Nordic pint glass canned on 9/13/18. Pours a very attractive cloudy orange yellow with a 2 plus finger head that leaves a big thick patchy wall of white lace. 4.25

Smell is apricot, mango, peach, a little hint of alcohol, and grapefruit rind. 4

Taste follows apricot, mango, and alcohol upfront, with a healthy dose of grapefruit in the long lingering finish. 4

Mouthfeel is a big medium, soft on the palate, a tad sticky from all the dry hopping, and at 8.8% I can definetly detect a little alcohol, but still goes down rather easy. 4

Overall this is a very solid NEDIPA that I am excited to be able to sip again. Sometimes your first impression can be misleading, many times I score too high the first go around, but this is a solid beer. 4

This beer is a little older than I would prefer for any IPA, but it was in the fridge so I figured I'd try it out.

A - Dark golden color that you can see through okay. Lots of bubbles. Not a lot of head, and not a lot of lacing.

S - Very hoppy. Lots of grapefruit and orange peel.

T - Even though it's older, it's still quite hoppy. The grapefruit is definitely there, as well as some orange and pine. Not that boozy for an 8.8% beer.

F - Very smooth. Not a lot of carbonation. For an 8.8% beer, this goes down VERY easily.

O - A very good Double IPA. Not insanely hoppy, but that's probably because it's not as fresh as it should be. Still VERY good. It's well-balanced and is not very boozy for how much alcohol is in it. This is definitely something that could sneak up on you.

Pours slightly hazy, gold in color with minimal head. Taste is pine, pineapple, and resin. Medium bodied and carbonation, bitter. Makes for an above average interesting hop bomb.

I enjoyed this DBL! The best DBL IPA from DuClaw that I have tried so far.

Tall can ..... 12/7/17

Pours with a medium haze, dull orangey amber, lasting cap, leaves decent looking thicker strands of lacing.

Ripe orange peels on the nose.

More orange notes on the palate, along with some herbal and resiny hops....pretty tame and nothing overly amazing going on here. Decent to middle of the road IPA

Got kinda middling reviews so far, but I'm really digging it...

Golden body just shy of clear with a fat white head that draped some lace behind and persisted fairly well... Presented lots of citrusy melon notes and something deeper of a more pine-like nature, and had a dusty, berry-like sweetness I tend to associate with lupulin powders and double-dry hopping (though this is triple dry hopped)... Medium-weight and moderately bitter; mildly sweet and softly carbonated... I'm going above the rDev on this one, too... Thought it very good... Features Centennial hops and Citra and Simcoe lupulin powder...

12/7/17 canning...
