Cask conditioned. Served in a 12 oz (355 ml) nonic style glass at Beer Authority in New York, NY.
A: Pours a very dark brown color with strong mahogany highlights around the edges, a two finger, foamy, mocha head with substantial retention and foamy rings of lacing.
S: Very slightly tangy. Aromas of caramel/molasses, honey, and coffee, with a hot pepper note. Not sure I could distinguish one pepper from the other, but present.
T: Very slightly tart and very sweet. Palate largely follows the nose, but berry flavor is clearly evident. The pepper and bitterness combine to provide an important and substantial offset to prevent sweetness from overpowering. Really a clever way of approaching the composition of a sweet porter.
M: Full bodied with moderate, but very much present carbonation. Creamy, but leaving a distinct tingling sensation on palate.
O: Evidently brewed with habanero and blackberry. Really a great American porter, on a par with any I have tried in the past. Very flavor forward. Hope DuClaw packages and distributes it.
