Similar to a Belgian saison, this Biére de Garde is chestnut brown in color with malty, nutty-sweetness and notes of coffee and cocoa. Rich, but not heavy with a clean and smooth finish, whether you crack it open this season, or cellar it for next, you’ll delight its indulgent loveliness.

12 ounce can, canned on 02/12/21, thanks to Brutaltruth for this brew! Served in a Teku, the beer pours a somewhat hazy dark brown/reddish color with about an inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like chocolate, caramel, coffee and some nuttiness. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some dark bread and toasted malt flavors noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's smooth and easy enough to drink with a moderate amount of carbonation. I liked this brew, it's good overall. Wouldn't mind trying this one fresher in the future but it's still tasty now!

From the 12 oz can in a snifter this "Bière de Garde" pours a dark and
lightly murky chestnut brown with ruby highlights and a nice head of kahki
foam that settles to a thick ring, thin dusty layer, and shows some very nice lacing.
Nose of dark chocolate, subtle coffee, coconut cream, earthy malts, faint allspice
hints, and light herbal notes. Flavors surpass by a nice presentation of a unique brew
featuring cocoa, vanilla, coffee, cream, nutty roasted malts, toasted coconut hints, earthy
malt backbone, moderate cherry, and light allspice. Nice mouth feel; medium light
body, nice soft carbonation, and a rich balanced finish that is lightly dry and hard to
describe.

Overall----unique.....true to style....not like any I have had, but it is a great tasting beverage with
a lot of character that is finely balanced!

Cheers

A: pours up a muddy amber-brown with a three-finger beige head with medium retention, moderate lacing.
S: Nutty aromas and notes of malt, chocolate and coffee, smells like a porter and has a slight metallic note.
T: Nuttiness and chocolate jump out first, followed by subtle hints of cherry. There are notes of fruit here, but the malt takes center stage. No real bitterness here or discernible hop flavor. Some slightly dark fruit notes come out as the beer sits.
M: Medium body, medium carbonation.
O: This is a decent beer, and an interesting one, but I have a hard time describing it as a Bière de Garde. I’m sure that from a technical perspective it fits the bill, but it takes more than cold storage for a beer to represent that style if you ask me. Is this worth picking up should you come across it? Sure. Is this a good example of what a Biére de Garde is. Well, like most American examples of the style, sadly no it is not.

An interesting experience...

On the one hand it was a unique looking brew, a reddish-brown hue that was honestly appealing to the eyes. Also, the smells was super complex - a mixture of chocolate, caramel, citrus, and allspice.

Now on the other I wasn’t as impressed with the mouthfeel as I would have liked. The taste was good, but booze-forward. This drowned out much of the flavors that were their, just hiding behind that posted 10%.

Beautiful chestnut brown color, fairly hazy (not in the haze boi sense). Light tan head that fizzles out quickly and leaves no lace.
Smells lovely—immediate nutty malts, milk chocolate, brown sugar-ish notes and faint alcohol.
Really fascinating beer. This is fun. A light touch of toastiness, some definite booze, fairly light for such a big beer-medium bodied with med-light carbonation. Med-sweet malts, dark milk chocolate (milk carob?), sweet brown bread, mild rounded bitter finish.
This is fun. Love seeing people play in the realm of big beers outside the standard barleywines and stouts. I definitely want another couple fresh and a couple to age and have at increments.

L- Rich, dark, caramel body, highly bubbly, light marshmellow white head
S- Warm hops, barley, nice milk-chocolate and caramel
T- Very sweet, notes of caramel and milk chocolate, wheat, tastes of carob nuts, what I imagine chararcters in Skyrim would drink in a tavern.
M- Light, bubbly, easy to sip on, unique
O- Fantastic nutty and sweet ale, high ABV, overall a really solid and unique beer.

Bought at Hazel's in Boulder CO. < $5 for a 12 oz can. no canning date, consumed 04/06/21 on a rainy date.

T&M: Pecan-colored beer. Fizzy tan/yellow head that pours a finger, but dies quickly. Small particles of unfiltered bits. The aroma contains cereal malty qualities, blackstrap molasses, brown sugar, and bready yeast. ABV is felt in the aroma.

A&S: Nutty, malty, caramel, but has that barnyard funk. This beer is at least top 10 for hiding ABV. I can honestly say I would have guessed 6%, it is unreal that it is 10%. Initially, it felt pretty crisp, but as it warms it becomes smoother with medium body and carbonation.

Overall: really solid, especially for the price. It is also a little different, I think fun/entertaining is a good way to put it. Cheers

Brewed with ground carob nuts...

Uses pilsner, flaked barley, Munich, Biscuit, Carafa, and Caramalt malts, and Saaz hops...

Not at all what I was expecting, and way better than I'd hoped for... For some reason I was expecting a pale golden saison-like ale... Instead, an opaque dark brown ale with a beige head... Some sediment notable on the finish... This is delicious - reminds me of if Belgium made a sweet coffee and nut brown ale - incredibly nutty and chewy, with sweetness of carob coming off like cocoa-dusted chestnuts... Very rich and malty, amply sweet with blackstrap molasses notes - coffee and chicory elements air and dry it out...

Had another...

I'll just reiterate what I said before - it's warm and nutty with cocoa and coffee; malty and with nuts (lol) like an English nut brown ale, but with a sweetness more akin to Belgian ales - the 10% abv is surprising, but again, I was expecting a pale-colored saison-like drink - this is a rich, hearty, warming, and sweet thing - the carob flavor is a blast - reminds me of Ovaltine malt... An unexpectedly good and fun beer...

What are you still doing here? Go get one already...
