Based on the classic English Milk Stout, the 4th experiment in our eXile Series, first brewed in 2011, X.4 Macchiato Milk Stout is black in color and full-bodied, with a silky, velvety mouthfeel, and rich aromas of roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee. It is 6.3% abv and low in hop bitterness, balancing flavors of roasted malt, chocolate, and real espresso verdi so lush, that when it’s time for a refill you won’t know whether to look for a bartender or a barista.

22oz bomber Poured into DuClaw pint glass. No bottled date but I'm fairly sure this was brewed late 2012.

Appearance: Pours near black with a very thin tan head that fades to nothing all too quickly. No lacing.

Smell: Roasted espresso beans. Sweet milk chocolate.

Taste: Sweet chocolate malts lead the way. Espresso and roast coffee are there but to a lesser extent. Finish is a a nice roasty & lactic sugar sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Exceptionally smooth and drinkable. Good balance of roasty and sweet. Medium bodied. Carbonation is a little flat.

Overall; I enjoyed it but I guess was expecting a little more out of it. Still It's a great example of a milk stout.

22oz bottle poured into imperial pint glass. Thanks StormKing47!

A: Pours clear near black with a minimal thin light brown head that faded into a thin collar.
S: Espresso and roast all the way with a hint of sweet lactose sugar. Light scent. Roast dominant.
T: Creamy and integrated flavors of rich espresso, roasted dark malts, and lightly bitter chocolate. The finish is mildly sweet with lactose sugar and creamy chocolate syrup. Aftertaste is full of roast. Fairly simple but extremely delicious smooth and balanced. Slight caramel.
M: Medium body, light, slick, smooth mouthfeel, soft low carbonation.
O: A delicious milk stout with a creamy and balanced flavor. Smooth and delicious. Thanks again Josh.

650ml bottle poured into a stemless wine glass.

The beer pours a deep cola brown cola, almost black, but with obvious brown distinctions, quite opaque. A big, thick, caramel head billows high out of the beer, almost 3 fingers high that leaves a great network of lace and has moderate retention. The aroma is of light coffee, mild milk chocolate, lactose sugar and rich sweet dark grain. It's simple, indistinct, not enough distinct roast, balanced too heavily on sweetness, but yet, it's not really that sweet. The flavors mimic the nose, light coffee, strong lactose sweetness and cream flavor, rich grain, milk chocolate and a little vanilla. The flavors are quite weak, balanced more towards sweetness and feels watered down. The body is light, almost watery, could definitely use some richness. It hardly coats the tongue and finishes meekly.

Verdict: A beer that sounds good on paper, and has been executed well elsewhere, but this is a big miss. Nothing robust about this, the coffee barely comes across in any meaningful way, and everything is just unremarkable. I think that a richer base beer with a more impactful coffee presence would really help this beer.
