On tap @ the Arundel Mills location on 11/10/11. Served in a pint glass. This is their staple Venom APA that has been hopped with locally grown Cascade hops from Black Locust Farms in Northern MD.
Pours a clear copper, with a ½ finger of creamy off-white head. This has a pretty solid retention to it, as this continues to bubble and stay rich, and leaves back thick foamy swathes of lace. The aroma has a ripe herbal fruitiness to it, which additional notes of pine and spice in the middle. Some malts sweetness sits along the back, and compliments the fruit character well.
The taste has a mellower (at least compared to the regular Venom) citric bite to it, with the green crispness of grapefruit flavor and a spicy pithiness being the highlights. The strength of that crisp bitter bite does start to pick up as this warms. Herbal tones hang on the edges of the profile and while sweet malts do have their place here (with a bit of a toffee feel), they never do come close to overtaking the hops at any point. This finishes dry with some lingering notes of earthy feeling pith and a touch of dankness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and crisp feeling throughout, with an initial pop to the carbonation that then gets more smooth and creamy underneath. This is pretty easy feeling for the most part.
While this lacked some of the sharpness on the palate of the regular Venom, this still brought something different to the table, with a ripe and herbal feeling fruitiness that adds some mellowness to the profile and helps pull back some of the more assertive flavors here a bit. This was interesting but I think that I’ll still stick with the regular version for now.
