Laurelwood refers to this as a weizenbock, brewed for the 2005 Portland International Beer Festival. The style guidelines are tricky here and I don’t know the specifications of the yeast strain or the lagering regimen. Most bocks today are lagers that aren’t brewed with wheat until they reach the doppel range, though historic Einbecker biers were ales brewed with one-third wheat malt. The designation of dunkelweizen for this dark wheat beer seems accurate enough.

Vytzenbok is wet cinnamon color with obvious hefeweizen properties that include a cloven nose and banana esters. It also plays a touch of sugar late in the game. My pint arrived laceless and headless with its ischemic carbonation masked behind a spicy, peppery bite. A few sulfury off-notes in the nose gave me pause, but only momentarily.

An agreeable beer that would likely work well with one of those scrumptious Laurelwood desserts.
