Several years ago many brewers where going "hop happy" with the fresh stuff, producing wet-hopped ales inundated with an astringent measure of what tasted like chlorophyll. The rule of the day was to brew with 8-times more hop mass to account for the water weight of the fresh, undried crop. The results were grassy beers that flowed uneasily between the teeth.
Today, it seems that brewers are learning from previous efforts and are toning down the hops enough to maintain balance. This year's fresh hop ale at Laurelwood is brewed with locally grown Liberty hops, a variety with German Hallertau lineage. Hop Bale has a light fruity aroma like crushed strawberry vines. It is burnished amber with an overall appearance and character not unlike Anchor Steam. Even the beer's crisp finish and light, approachable body suggest a steam hybrid style.
Though Hop Bale has a green, herbaceous hop flavor, it is more enthusiastically balanced towards a casual grainy sweetness. Very enjoyable.
