Bold and forceful, like the man it was brewed to honor – Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, Gonzo offers complex layers of roasted chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, and vanilla malt flavors balanced with a one-of-a-kind hop bite that hits you like a homemade firecracker.

(2011 bottle). Nice enough BA imp porter w/good mouthfeel but all flavors have mellowed so much after 13 years as to be barely-there-detectable. Decent carbonation but must've been better when fresher.

Black with a perfect beige head. Coffee, hops , roasted malt in aroma. Roasted malt and coffee dominate in taste , with light chocolate notes. Strong roasted bitterness in finish; long, bitter aftertaste.

Almost black & very heady for a porter with a relatively high ABV. Extremely pleasant aroma with lots of chocolate, roasted malt & coffee. Salty-sweet with some bitterness. All the flavors promised are delivered: chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, vanilla, roasted malt & a milt hop kick. Hunter S Thompson may have thought he never got weird enough but Gonzo is delicious enough. A single fisted 2 thumbs up!

I had this beer from a bottle at my hotel bar in Arlington, VA which is surprisingly well stocked.
Poured into a tall snifter. Robust dark brown color with nice beige head and excellent curtain lacing. Initial fruity smell and taste, dark berries and sweet raisins. Also strong smell and taste of dark chocolate. Flavors of vanilla, licorice, and close to a stout. Very nice beer.

Dark chocolate color with a 1F head in an Orval chalice.
Deep coffee aroma.
Even more depth to the taste: deeper coffee, chocolate, some nutty flavor, followed a sharp bitterness from the bourbon barrel in the finish.
Drink warmer!
Great beer. A Porter on steroids!

Likely the same as the other ba Gonzo on here but drinking a 2010 in 2021 and wanted to jot down notes. Tan head. Black color. Whiskey, oak, raisins, figs, fudge, molasses, chocolate. Held up pretty well after 11 years. Still full bodied and thick. Some bitterness in the finish.

Deep dark brown body, clear, with a coffee crema head, fine and full, with a few minutes retention.
Aroma is heavy on dried dark fruit - stewed raisins & prunes, accompanied by chocolate, molasses, faint hint of alcohol; all coming together like a barleywine (which would have been my blind guess).
The taste takes an abrupt turn from fruitiness to rich roasted malt - deep dark chocolate, like drinking chocolate, dominates, and is rich with with some bitterness in the finish like dark roast espresso (not astringent); fine, biting effervescence provides balance, as does a decent touch of hop bitterness, distinct but harmonious with the malt bitterness; just a touch of fruitiness, like you'd find in quality dark chocolate; finish is very dry, lingering for days; medium-full body, with a relatively easy-drinking feel, not thick, slightly powdery; it has some pleasant warming heat to it.
Intense and richly flavoured, this is a treat for a winter day, though given a general lack of sweetness, it might be called slightly off-style (which suits me fine).

One of my favorites! If you like a strong beer, this is excellent. I often buy with Old Rasputin, Palo Santo Marron, and a few other strong beers. This remains one of my first choices.

Not sure of the vintage but the bottle was from the back of the shelf with other beers of a pre-2010 vintage. It hasn't aged very well. Totally flat, no barrel character (predictably). Wish I had consumed it sooner.
