Flying Dog Brewery "Brewhouse Rarities Dark Berry Sour"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "...ENJOY BY:03.24.22" and sampled on 02.22.22
$2.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: It's poured a hazy ruby colored body with orange highlights beneath a short head of pinkish off-white that dropped immediately to just a collar. The aroma delivers a very authentic sweet red raspberry aroma. According to the label it's made with blueberries, vanilla, lactose, and raspberry natural flavor so... whatever! On to the taste... just like the aroma it comes across as very authentic although it's definitely more blueberry than raspberry. It's not as tart as I thought it would be before smelling it, nor is it as sweet as I thought it might be after smelling it. The good news is that it's a perfect balance between tart and sweet. As is usually the case there's very little bitterness because none is needed, and it finishes tart and dry. In the mouth it's medium-light in body with a gentle zest on the tongue due to a moderate carbonation and the softer acidity. I'm glad that they did that because a higher carbonation level would have amplified the acidity and it wouldn't have been quite as nice as it is right now. So what do we have here? The blueberry comes in upfront, sweetened a bit by the vanilla, and then you recognize the raspberry as well. Then it's finished, and although it lingers for a bit it's pretty much the same. I won't call it a one-note beer because you at least have the two fruits, but it is a very one-sided beer. That's OK though. It's really nicely balanced and quite refreshing. Whoah! It's 6.8% ABV - I wasn't expecting that! I was aboout to say that it'd be a great summer beer for the company softball game, or an all day fishing excursion, whatever, but that's out the window now. It still has enough character that it's still worth enjoying from time to time, and you might even enjoy two in a row. Nicely done.

12 ounce bottle poured into a tulip glass. Enjoy by 03/24/22, so plenty fresh.
L---Opaque medium purple color. Light
O---Tastypinkish head faded quickly to a ring and left ok lacing.
S---Sweet & full of berries, mostly raspberry.
T---More sweet than sour, but there's still a bit there. Raspberries, and the blueberries show up.
F---A decent amount of pucker. Medium/light body with ok carbonation.
O---A really nice one. Both sweet and sour. Wifey approved of this one.

Appearance: Ruby red, small off white head, modest lacing.
Aroma: Distinctly berry-like with a hoppy underpinning.
Flavor: More tart than sour. Fruit still dominating. Sweet but not cloying. Dry aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Well carbonated, medium bodied. Lingering finish.
Overall: Tasty and enjoyable, but you really have to be in a mood for the style and selective about which foods you pair it with.
