Poured very dark brown...almost the color of mud. Had a nice head at first but quickly turned to a thin film atop the beer. The aroma was very malty with some carmel and some minor earth tones to it.
The taste was somewhat sweet and malty. Almost like a butterscotch hard candy. But it had more bite with a little bitterness at the end. Over all its a good beer I enjoed it.

Big 550 ml brown Euro bottle. Lugged home from my Scotland Vacation this summer. Best By 04/28/04 on the label. Medium dark wet shoe leather color of brown. Medium, rocky, big beige head. Bubbles faded to a slick thin covering rather quickly. Initial smells very much herbal tea like. Almost like Iced Tea, with something extra. Grainy. Taste was sweet and malty to start, very appropriate. The grainy tastes were still there, somewhat toasty. Hints of peat and heat. Some rich malty flavors come and go. Overall herbal tea smells and tastes seemed to win out, but not dominate. Medium to light bodied, and got very watery toward the finish. I expected a bit more I guess, and really wanted to be wowed by this beer. It might have lost something in storage/travel, and would probably be much better on tap. Still a worthwhile suvenior from Scotland..."where they put the holes hundreds of yards away !"

Poured with a bubbly three-finger head that barely stays, leaving some lace. Medium carbonation. Nice clear, amber color starts malty, finishes sweet and with a bit of hops but only a little bitterness. Malty nose. Light to medium bodied. Marketed as a traditional ale which it is.

Sweet malty flavour, bit of a toffee caramel flavour, kind of mild but satisfying bitterness, but tended to have an off character which didn't really agree with me, probably the buttery caramel flavour, it wasn't a total loss however.
