Stopped by brewery/restaurant during Tulip Festival for a growler. Minimal carbonation. Deep caramel color. Malty, but not up to a doppelbock standard. I'd say this tastes more like a scotch ale.

I was told good things about this brewpub, but based on my first beer I am not planning to return any time soon.

Used to be that LaConner was among the top brewpubs in the PNW. This Doppelbock is indicative of where they are at now ; ok beers that really don't stand out. This beer is on the thin side for the style and has the benefit of being not too sweet and quite drinkable. It is however not very complex and you forget about it after you leave the pub.

Pint consumed at the brewpub in Laconner for $4.25.

This was a reddish brown color with an inch of beige-tan foam perched on top. Spotty lace.

Odd, candied-fruit odor. I've had fruity smelling doppels before, but this one didn't seem quite right, with a maraschino cherry and sweet grain thing going on.

Underwhelming in the taste department as well. Cloyingly sweet. Noticeably boozy at the swallow.

The body is somewhere between medium and full, with a creamy mouthfeel.

The elements for the style are there, but it needs some fine tuning. One pint was enough for me.

At first, I thought they brought me the wrong beer. A reddish dark amber Doppelbock? okay, well what does it smell like? hmm... honey and heather. Are you sure this isn't a scotch ale (even though their wasn't one listed)? well, it tastes like tea and has a hop bite with a little maltiness in the background and it is smooth and kind of creamy. I call scotch on you!

This was a fairly tasty beer just not exactly what I expected.

When I first moved to the Northwest, LaConner was one the top breweries around. Then after an ownership change and the brewer moving on, the beers really started to suffer. After hearing that the beers were back on the upswing, I've given them a revisit.

This beer was served in a straight pint glass. It poured a reddish brown color with a thin cap of tan head that had no retention or lacing.

The aroma was mostly malty-sweet with a noticeable alcohol hit at the back. The flavors followed along fairly similarly, with a big alcohol bite at the finish.

The body and drinkability were both average for the style. This may not be the best for the style but is a sign that brewery is moving in the right direction.

Appearance – Dark brown in color with a nice head but one that went away fairly quickly.

Smell – Super-rich aroma of dark yeasty malts. I can pick up a lot of butter and some dark, ripe fruits as it warms.

Taste – The fruits really come out at the taste. This is one malty, sugary lager. This reminds me of the Forst Sixtus. It also has a definite German sense so it.

Mouthfeel – A little bigger than medium in the body and very smooth. This one just flows down the esophagus with the greatest of ease. It feels wonderful in the cheeks.

Drinkability – I think the big Fish Tale Detonator is the only other example of an American effort at the style. This is tough, tough, tough, but open to interpretation. LaConner did a fabulous job with this first effort. They don’t have the best reputation with malty ales but this was a terrific job.
