The pour looks about like a Super Kitty, Tommy Keegan's mega strong ale that uses Hurricane Kitty as base, and adds massive quantities of hops and honey. Dark amber, not much head, highly refractive and thick look to it.
The smell is full of the rye whiskey barrel, heavily scented atop the companion aromae of malty caramel, and citrus, pine, and floral hops. A spicy and warm fragrance lets you know this ain't no five plus ABV Hurricane Kitty.
The taste of this is a full flavor, to say the least, fronted by strong whiskey and oak tones, a bit of caramel and neutral sweet joining in, beautiful citrus and floral hops hold hands with drying pine into a finish that is the heat of alcohol, the bitter of citrus pith, and the more drying, resinous aspects of pine competing for control. This is a flavor that is beyond a smack in the face, it is a shock to the system of electric flavor. As it warms alcohol becomes even more prominent. There is another bottle in the cellar to be opened Father' Day 2011, a touch less alcohol in the profile would benefit this masterpiece for sure.
Mouthfeel is very low carb., perfectly so, very highly viscous, incredibly clean, and a finish that is dry and on fire (in a good way).
Drinkability is rated as being a sloooowww sipper of the dangerous kind.
Impression: Another beer to showcase the talents of the Hudson Valley's premier brewer (sorry Scott Vaccaro). While unlikely to come your way, this is a must try!
