Munkholm is a small landlocked island close to Holbæk – not least known for the Munkholm Bridge. The name was obvious, as we use a Belgian monastery yeast for the beer.

Munkholmer was the first beer brewed at Holbæk Bryghus in 2005. Actually, it was a mis-brew, as it should have been a completely different beer. But our customers thought it was too good to throw away, so we have kept it in our range ever since!

Munkholmer is a beer as black as night. Typically, it is a hybrid between Stout and Schwarzbier. The dark, roasted malt gives the beer characteristic notes of coffee and dark chocolate.

Copenhagen 25/10 2018. 50 cl bottle from Superbrugsen, Nykøbing Sjælland. Holbæk Brewerys usual design with the Brewery Name surrounded by a Corona. A lot of text describing the beer as hybrid between a Schwatzbier and a Stout.

Pours very dark brown with very bubbly, light beige head. Disappears fairly fast leaving only a a thin rim of foam along the side of the glass.

Aroma is not very intense. Sweet cocoa and chocolate. Bitter sour notes of cold coffee. Light odor of roasted malts.

Medium strong carbonation. Soft and a little flat texture.

Flavor is pretty light and surprisingly bitter. Light sweetness followed by more prominent bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter with a sour twist. Lingers for a while.

Light yet bitter stout with a sourish twist.
