Appearance: Pours with one of those huge, unmanageable, smooth, rocky white heads you might expect from a Belgian pale ale... or a German wheat beer. Great retention, obviously. Body is a clear dandelion mellow gold with lots of visible bubbles in a hurry to get to the top.
Smell: Banana bread, and I mean banana bread en masse. Hugely fruity with undertones of white wine, sugar cane, bubble gum, and - no, I am not kidding - piña coladas, lush with vanilla rum-laced coconut and pineapple. Some spicy clove notes appear as well, along with a light medicinal touch and some leafy Pilsner-esque hop accents.
Taste: Ah, the nose raised my expectations so high, of course the flavor couldn't have lived up to them! But it's still good. Light and weirdly savory, distinctly like fresh-baked bread and boiled artichokes. Fruity and spicy as well, with a bone-dry finish. Like a perfect compromise between the soft fruitiness of a Hefe Weizen and the zip of a Pilsener. A very good summer beer, saison-like in many ways.
Mouthfeel: Very light and effervescent, with a drought of a finish that you can feel coming from miles away. I do wish this were a tad smoother.
Drinkability: More nice work from Otaru. I got this in one of their crazy growlers at Leibspeise (in the Sapporo TV Tower) for 3800¥. I would have paid that price for just the growler itself, but its contents are a very nice bonus!
