Copenhagen 5/1 2018. 33 cl bottle from Meny, Østerfælled Torv, Kbh Ø. Simple white label sayin “Bad Habit” in semi-gothic letters. They present it as a “Abbey Tripel”.

Pours hazy orange with small-ish white head. Settles as thin almost transparent layer of foam unable to cover the surface of the beer. Moderate Lacing.

Aroma does not bring a Belgian Tripel to mind. Sweetish malts, light smoke. Sharpish lemonade. Citrus and oranges. White sugar. Quite citric with a sweet undertone. Some English hops peeking in.

Medium strong carbonation. Medium thick, lively texture. A little sticky.

Flavor is quite sweet followed by medium bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter and a little harsh. Lingering.

Good English strong ale with a notable bitterness. Despite their marketing efforts I don’t think it bears much resemblance to a Belgian Tripel.

St. Austell Brewery – Bad Habit
Tripel – 8.2% - 750ml Bottle - Best Before End Dec 2016

Appearance: Slightly cloudy, deep straw colour, perfectly white, one finger head. Light carbonation for the style. Poor head retention.

Aroma: Spicy yeast, clove, alcohol, apple and banana. Very nice aroma, reminds of both Chimay and St. Bernardus tripel here.

Taste: Slight rusty type flavour, then pepper and hops followed up by warming alcohol. I'm also getting banana and apple very late in the finish. Despite reminding me of two well-known Belgians in the aroma, it does differ taste-wise.

Mouthfeel: Lacking a little in carbonation. The lighter side of full bodied. Bitter, dry finish.

Overall: Being a Cornish-born Belgian beer fan I have been looking forward to sampling both this and the dubbel (Cardinal Syn) and I can safely say, they do the county proud. While they are not on a par with the Belgians, they are both good beers in their own right and fair representations of the styles.
