Deep brown-amber coloured with a rich smokey aroma. Flavours of caramel, chocolate and peated malts. With it's silky smooth, lightly smokey, roasty character it is a fantastic gold medal winning example of the style.

From bottle
Appearance: Vibrant red and brown colour. Somewhat dark. Pours with thin brown head that rapidly fades with some lacing.
Smell: Almost nothing. Maybe a bit of caramel.
Taste: Very mild, light-bodied, and watery. Chocolate can be tasted in the back along with a hint of caramel. Carbonation is minimal. While I can't speak to the malt used, there is definitely a sickly sweet off taste that I would pin as excessive amounts of corn. Regardless of the cause, the off taste is definitely there. No hint of roast or smokiness detected.
Overall: Not recommended. Desirable flavours are far too mild and there is an off taste that would probably be hidden if the flavour was stronger.

A: beautiful dark brown with red highlights, visible carbonation when held to light, one finger of lingering foamy tan head.
S: I'm struggling to pick up much. Very light notes of roasted malt. I'm not really smelling the caramelization I would expect of a Scotch ale. The malt doesn't seem roasted enough for the style.
T: It's not as awful as I'd feared from the smell, but this doesn't taste like a Scotch ale should. It has far less flavour than it should, there's no taste of caramel, no chocolate flavours, and the flavour I am picking up is less than pleasant.
F: Smooth, I guess.
O: Avoid!

341ml bottle poured into pint glass 19/10/11

A clear brownish amber with a short lived light tan thumbs width of foam that leaves zero lace

S rye bread, honey and iced tea no where near a scotch ale

T if you passed me this with a couple ice cubes in it I wouldn't doubt for a second that it was a glass of iced tea. tastes old and oxidized just not quite right

M full for the color but could use a little more bubbles

O not what I'm looking for in a Scotch Ale just didn't do it for me

I've had 3 Pump House brews in the last few days and 2 of them haven't been quite right. I had the IPA on tap in Halifax and it was great and the SOB in bottle before and I remember it being pretty good. I hope this a isolated incident and the breweries as good as I remember

341mL, no date.

Pours a dark, clear garnet. Nice color, but the lackluster head does not impress.

The aroma is wonderfully smokey and peaty, with some dark malts in there too.

Flavor is also smokey, though mainly darkly malty with a distinctly black tea flavor (odd). Some really light dark fruit and raisin. Bitterness is low, overall body is light. The carbonation is fine, but the mouthfeel is a bit too watery for such a flavorful brew.

Great aroma and interesting flavor. Not perfect but decent.
