Ok, so I'm at the 13th Annual World Wine Festival 2003 and over in the specialty section is the Pump House Brewery. Their restaurant/pub is "hosting" a couple of the Argentinian wines. I stroll over and low and behold they have two pumps set up. One for this year's ('03) Pump House Barley Wine and one for last year's Barley Wine 2002. Wow, they saved some for the WWF. Cool.
I handed over my sample glass and out came this beautiful brown beer with a huge medium brown head. The smell jumped right out of the glass. Excellent. I had to go sit down. I just sat and watched the thing sitting there in the glass. That head would not go away. I drank. Thick and strong. A smooth but strong aftertaste of everything. I don't honestly know how to describe it. Not having access to these types of beer around this part of the world I was taken aback. The only thing one could do was present the sample glass again. I only hope I mature as wonderfully as this barley wine. Interestingly, I had just had the '03 version of it about two hours before at the Pump House. Hope that one ages as well too and I hope they save some to sample next year.
