An "Imperial CDA" as described by the brewery. Served in 10oz goblet. Poured a solid black color with about 1/4 inch of light brown head that had moderate retention and good lacing.
In somewhat of a surprise, the aroma was pretty low on malt and had no roast notes, and had some bitter hop tones. Not really citrusy, just bitter. The beer started out the same on the tongue, but the (by now) expected roast of the style showed through. Not quite coffee-like, but solid roast. The was a bit of pine & floral hops in the front and middle of the palate, and some bitter grapefruit on the back end.
The body was nicely medium which helped drinkability a lot, was surprisingly smooth, and the bitter finish lingered a bit too long for my tastes. Drinkability was dangerously good, you could get a couple of these almost 10% brews down without really realizing it. Overall, a decent example of a style that I'm not a big fan of. Certainly worth trying during it's limited release.
