my first from these guys, a strong effort in a tricky style, but this is classically done and quite dialed in, a nice introduction for me. clear copper colored lager with a pillowy near inch of just off pure white head, prickly carbonation, looks the part. a nice nose, easily recognizable as a vienna lager, the grain is decidedly nutty, toasted, a touch caramelized without being too sweet, right on for the style, and its earthy minerality can still be appreciated, soft pretzel, honey, toffee, bready, very nice with the european lager yeast, this is subtle and tidy, a bit autumnal for this time of year, but true vienna lager is welcome anytime. the flavor follows the nose, all very fresh to me. the malt is nutty and hearty and baked to my senses but not super heavy because the lagering is so effective, really nice interplay between the grain and the yeast, and this is drier than it starts, lighter in body than many, and pretty easy drinking for a malt driven beer that does have some body. the carbonation is good, the hops are minimal but balancing as they should be in this style, and overall its a pretty impressive brew from a quality standpoint, seems like these folks are off to a good start. high degree of old world authenticity to this, very well done.
