one of the most interesting beers ive ever had, from a brewery i had never heard of before this, they call it bread beer ipa, but what it essentially is, is a kvass ipa, which is completely new territory, way cool! actually made with surplus bread like a proper kvass, but hopped up like a modern ipa, i cant say enough about this one, even if it wasnt perfectly fresh or super well refined when i had it, its a wonderfully ambitious project and i loved it. the beer pours a rusty orange color with light haze and a puffy inch of lasting white head, very well carbonated but also some pieces of floating sediment in here which makes it less pretty, almost sandy looking, fairly course, but it ends up being a minimal distraction to the drinking experience. the aroma is unique, the hops are citrus forward with zested navel orange and tangerine character, some bitterness to me, and a pretty good intensity, but its the malt and grain side of this thats interesting, the bread is somewhat apparent right away, yeah some mid crystal type malt is here, but the bread part is too, like the crust and even some of the yeast, like this had a bread yeast aspect that makes it pretty complex, not heavy with this, light oxidation and hop greenness, but its a little better even in the flavor, where the hops pop with bright citrus, have nice escalating bitterness, and the bread part is again evident, sort of has that stretch and chew, the yeast again, and a cool earthiness about it, the hops and the bread go together super well too, like this is so interesting yet also so subtle, still an ipa, just really nuanced. i love how creative this is, i love how it marries these two styles, and it has me curious about more kvass hybrids. the bread here seems quality, kind of rustic, and i think the recipe is really well constructed around it. lively feeling beer, can conditioned type excitement on the palate, soft and pillowy, almost spongey like bread itself, drier than it starts, distinctive on the ferment, and plenty bitter. delicious beer, one of a kind! put these guys on the map! huge creativity points for this.
