Presentation: Sampled at Fernandes Brewery Tap in Wakefield, West Yorkshire during a lazy Sunday afternoon spent crawling around Wakefield Town Centre. Handpump #4of #6 had the classic Archers style pumpclip with its colorful presentation which includes a bright yellow Orchid as the mainstay. Listed as Golden Orchid, 4.1% ABV.
Appearance: Soft white head is tight and creamy set against a vry clear pale golden stomach. The overall appereance benefits from a tight creamy head which lasts. Looks a little too pale and thin though. Average when all is balanced out.
Nose: Hops and lots of flowery twats, as the Fawlty Towers episode will attest to. Spring time feel, that fresh daffodil breeze runs across this one. Clean but flowery.
Taste: Lots of citrus based hops dominate this one, fresh feel, and lemony entrance with a zingy hop character. Light feel to the body but high carbonation seem to produce an energetic lively hoppy brew that drinks well.
Mouthfeel: Does enough to keep its head above the waterline, and whilst it never sinks it seems to bob about the Plimsoll line with impudence. Fair-to-middling body with a does what it has to it feel about it.
Drinkability: A nice enough brew, the floral hoppy nature really entices during an afternoon session when I wanted to try several brews. A palatable brew that sinks easily thanks to its fine conditioning and tasty mid-riff.
Overall: The second of two Archers brews that I tried in one afternoon, and in fact in the same establishment. Whilst the earlier Archers Last of Winter was an unbalanced malty (Winter) Bitter, the Golden Orchid was at least a more attractive floral hoppy brew that drank well. But you know, I still rue the days that Archers made a handful of great beers, rather than several hundred (no exaggeration!!) bland ones. They have a continuing range of non-descript so-so new brews which appear with new identities almost every week it seems. Sure they appeal to the beer-spotter mentality, but fall short in the quality stakes for my liking. Not bad, but still just an average brew that fails to excite. My God, I used to wet myself when I saw Archers Headbanger, its not even a part of the portfolio anymore. I think I see where Archers are heading, and I will not be following them.
