Scona Gold is crystal clear and the color of ripe hay. Light carbonation supports a fluffy, bone white head with good retention.
Scona Gold’s aroma starts off a delicate balance of bready pale malts and subtle fruitiness. The fruitiness I’m smelling is delicate in nature, and yet ripe and present enough to be easily noted. To me it comes across somewhere between ripe pear and nectarine or apricot. Either way, very pleasant with just enough aroma of soda cracker and fresh baked bread to give the nose its own little backbone. All of this moves towards a center where I find what smells to me like white wine and just a faint whiff of sulfur. All of this drops away into a crisp, clean finish.
Taking a sip, Scona Gold reminds me more of a lager at first. The flavor up front is smooth and crisp, tasting more of soda cracker than I thought it would based on the beer’s overall aroma. Flavors of soda cracker lead into a slightly vinous center coupled with a hint of residual sweetness. The finish is dry without being overly so, finishing with the peppery flavor of European hops.
Scona Gold is crisp, clean, balanced like and good European lager would be. It also has the vinous, and subtle fruitiness you might expect from a good Kolsch as well. I find it impressive when a craft brewery is able to produce a faithful, respectful version of a classic European beer. The attitude is so often to produce an eclectic interpretation of said style. To that end, personally I’m happy Alley Kat was able to make their Scona Gold into a very good Kolsch style beer

341ml bottle poured into tulip.
Pours pale yellow with half a finger of white head that leaves dripping blobs of lace as it recedes.
Smells of grainy pale malt, mild tangy citrus and grassy, flowery hops.
Tastes of more doughy, grainy pale malt, white grapes, mild orange and lemon zest and more green and floral hops.
Feels light and mild. Light bodied with gentle carbonation. Finishes off-sweet.
Verdict: Recommended. Very nice when you're thirsty.

This was a completely bland and flavourless beer. A very faint hop profile, a slight corn-like sweetness and no other aromas or flavours to speak of.

A - Light golden, clear.
S - Clean cereal malt and very light citrusy hop aroma
T - Very light hops and medium body. A little less body and more hops than other Kolsch's I've tried.
F - Very crisp, clean and refreshing.
O - Great summer beer. A nice refreshing lightness but still has some weight and flavor behind it. My favorite from Alley Kat's regular lineup.

Overall, this is a very enjoyable summer beer. It is bright, perhaps lacking in head and carbonation. The bright, crackery, pale pineapple flavour is extremely pleasant. It finishes dry and without pretense, but disappears quickly. Not a grand slam, but this beer definitely rounds the bases.

Bottle poured into a flute. A ginger ale-like gold color capped with an impressive frothy white gluten-reduced head, I am curious to see how this take stacks up against the recently reviewed Rhinestone Cowboy from Big Rock, and I am not a homer as I have a generally very favorable opinion of this brewery from up north, particularly their "Big Bottle" offerings. In any event, the aroma here is decidedly kolsch, light cracker malts leading the way, a little breakfast cereal and mellow toasted grain husk, and a refined yet snappy fruitiness like white grapes. Classic aroma for the style. Palate is fruitier than many other exemplars of the style, almost a canned peach and maraschino cherry vibe, more grapes and flavorsome yet rather delicate malting, maybe a whiff of Vienna or something else lightly toasted. Hops are low key, hay-like, faintly floral. Moderate body and low carbonation, a bit surprising. Although purists may find this insufficiently dry, I am quite liking the slowly developing malt flavors and decided emphasis on fruity esters. Subtle chalky aftertaste does little to detract, and although a little graininess and an artificial sweetener note peek through here and there, overall effect is pleasant. Although I may prefer the malt emphasis in Rhinestone, this may be the superior overall package.
