650ml bottle - the latest single-hopped Dragon DIPA, this time with the Azacca varietal (as indicated by a tiny apologetic sticker on the label, which actually specifies Mosaic) - but that's why pencils have erasers, right?
This beer pours a clear, medium copper amber colour, with three zaftig fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and mildly bubbly ecru head, which leaves some splendid drooping webbed lace around the glass as it slowly but surely sinks away.
It smells of lightly buttered white bread, muddled domestic citrus rind, a bit of peppery yeastiness, grainy and crackery caramel malt, and some prominent leafy, herbal, and well-perfumed floral green hop bitters. The taste is grainy and bready caramel malt, some near Halls-worthy eucalyptus, a still muddled citrus and tropical fruitiness, subtle earthy yeast, and more zingy weedy, herbal, and pungent floral verdant hoppiness.
The carbonation is quite heady in its palate-probing frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and more or less smooth, with a wee airy creaminess evolving as things warm up (and settle down) around here. It finishes off-dry, the base bready caramel malt holding fast, while the citrusy, boozy floral, and weird herbal hop kiddies flit about, trying to postpone bedtime.
Overall, this is a minor delta for this series of single hop big IPA affairs for Alley Kat, in that the hop effects are different enough to almost make me forget the familiarity of the house yeast and malt profile. Very perfumed and herbal in its bearing, but strangely drinkable all the same. Another decent offering indeed.
