Thanks to Jim at Sherbrooke for the sample. This has got to be one of my favourite beer labels yet, priceless! The hunched over cowboy mounted on a rhino in the middle of a grain field. From what I've been led to understand this is sorta an experiment to make an Alberta version of Innis & Gunn.

Pours out a deep dark somewhat cloudy nut brown, although some transluscency is apparent when held to light, along with blood ruby highlights. No head on pour or head retention.

The nose on this ale is absolutely gorgeous however! Intense rich toffee malts accentuated by a boozy grain sweetness, with dark dried fruits lingering in the background.

Alberta version of Innis & Gunn? More like the Alberta version of Unibroue, minus the yeast sediment. This packs two fists worth of flavour, possesses almost a more rummy character to it than rye, however intense bundt cake, dried figs and dates along the lines of the malt, a brown sugary and raisin sweetness throughout, with a lingering of raisins on the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, has more weight to it than I expected since there seems to be so little carbonation.

An interesting experiment indeed, seems to me given the high octane of it that it needs to age a bit to allow more of the character to develop and mellow. Looking forward to batch #2!

From the beer of the month club at Sherbrooke Liquor. I've been told that Alley Kat plans on future versions of this that will vary quite a bit in alcohol content and flavour. I really wasn't that excited about this one, as I've found the few barrel aged beers I've had to be overated, but now that I've tasted it...

A fairly dark reddish brown that can be seen through. A hard pour couldn't force much more than a wisp of head on it though. Looked like a cola to me at first.

The smell is of rye whiskey, but not the burning liquor soaked smell you get from sticking your nose in a rye bottle. It is softer, and infused with a vanilla oak aroma. There is just the slightest hint of hop aroma in there as well, almost coming across as minty. Smells not bad.

There is a suggestion of maltiness from front to back in the flavour, but the bulk of the taste is rye whiskey and a soft vanilla. It all mixes together pretty nicely, and makes for a smooth tasting beer. No alcohol burn at the end. The mouthfeel could be fuller, and the carbonation is very low, but it isn't bad.

Much more drinkable than I thought it would be. It is practically 10% yet it goes down very easily. A nice first crack at the barrel aging by Alley Kat. Now I'm looking forward to how the next batch turns out.
