The second use of the first barrel produced some interesting results according to Jim from Sherbrooke Liquor. Apparently some sort of infection has brought out a tart sourness. Word is this is the last time Alley Kat will re-use a barrel, so this version will be quite unique.
Deep red-brown but quite transparent. Very strong pour generated only the thinnest of heads that fizzed away and left a ring.
Aroma instantly brings to mind a Flanders Red with its tartness, however the fruity base is replaced by the rye and vanilla of this beer. Certainly different, kind of enticing.
Quite watery and flat as it hits the mouth. A touch of caramel sweetness followed by just a light tartness, like just a hint of wild yeast. Thin rye impression to finish. All flavours just too faint to impress.
As an experiment this is quite interesting, but as a beer it falls way short. Not enough substance to the taste, feel and smell to consider it a success. That being said, I would love for a local brewer to take on a sour ale on purpose.
