A steam beer brewed in collaboration between Alley Kat and Sherbrooke Liquor for the 25th anniversary of the Taste Of Edmonton festival, from a personal recipe by Edmonton's own beer ambassador Jason Foster.

Pours out a bright transluscent amber, tall creamy off-white head with good retention and recedes slowly. Intermittent patches of lacing.

Floral and light herbal hops at first on the nose, and even a little bit of wood, with a nutty malt base. Far more character than I had anticipated for the style.

Starts off with a solid medium-bodied mouthfeel, smooth, finishing with a more effervescent texture.

There is a nutty character up front in the flavour, a bit twiggy, finishing with an earthy and herbal hop profile. The aftertaste is earthy, dry, even a bit spicy at times, and it lingers long.

A more robust take on the style, and us hop fans in the crowd aren't disappointed by it either. In fact if it wasn't for lager yeast this would also easily translate into a decent English Bitter. Worth checking out, and at the time of writing this review there is still a palette of it left at Sherbrooke, so pick some up while it lasts.

Produced by Alley Kat for the 25th anniversary of the Taste of Edmonton festival, in conjunction with Sherbrooke Liquor, from the recipe of Edmonton home brewer Jason Foster. Five dollar single at the beer gardens at said event, in the blazing late afternoon sun...

This beer pours a clear medium pale copper hue, with one finger of thin soapy white head, that leaves a wee bit of lace around the (admittedly, plastic) glass as it recedes. It smells mildly sweet and fruity, banana esters, mostly, and soft white grains and floral hops. The taste is somewhat sour, acerbic caramel malt, some bready yeastiness, and soft earthy hops. The carbonation is kind of high, the body decently full, and it finishes dry and crisp.

My overall impression of this beer is that it really reminds me of the house flavour at Brewsters, which isn't a bad thing, just surprising. I've noticed this with a few of Alley Kat's malty seasonals over the past few years. Its role as the celebratory beer for this summertime festival is well achieved, as it is easy drinking for the beer garden masses, with some challenging characteristics for those who wish to look for them.
