Appearance: Served up a very dark brown, near black body. More of a true brown tone at the edges. Medium-small, fine-textured, beige head.
Smell: Some roastiness leaning more towards a cooked toast toastiness with hoppy aromatics of grapefruit, light pine, earthy herbals and melon.
Taste: Faintly roasty, still holds more of a toasted bread quality and its hint of chocolate is pretty light, at best. A bit more tropical than the nose, with pineapple, plantain and starfruit joining the initial citrus, pine and herbs. Medium-light bitterness. Beyond the appearance, it's an IPA with minimal dark malt aspects.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Overall: Instead of a hard, unforgiving roast element from black patent malt, they used altogether easy-going midnight wheat and the sinamar colorant. Less of a Black IPA and more of an IPA in blackface.
