A complex malt recipe lends flavors reminiscent of raisin, caramel and licorice that melt into a smooth lager finish.

a delicious and faithful interpretation of the style, and a perfect late night campfire beer as the wind picks up and the temperature drops, it has me excited for fall already. i love a dark strong lager anyway, and this is a good one, a bit apart from what i have known red lodge to generally brew, but they nailed this. its clear and shiny dark brown color with some copper and red at the edges of the glass. the aroma is a little sweet like molasses, long cooked german bready malts, and a bit of lager yeast coming through as well. the flavor is rich and earthy, both sweet and grounded, baked and warming but not boozy. its got the lager feel but a on of body, and some cool nuance from soy to honey to bran muffin, but a nice finishing cleanness that i didnt expect. its balanced and old worldy, traditional but fresh tasting compared to the imports, and really just an extremely delicious and solid example of a style that doesnt get enough love from american brewers. one of the better red lodge beers i have ever had really, especially from a technical standpoint. a gift from my ladys mother, how awesome! it got me thinking about fall, thanksgiving, and those types of occasions, i hope to get my hands on some more. a standout from a great session!

Deep brown body with small white head.
Flavors are wonderful. Deep bread and light sweetness. Light carbonation makes this one smooth sipper!
Well done Red Lodge!!!

Poured from bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a deep mahogany brown color with a tiny off white head of foam. The head fades very fast leaving a little bit of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is very strong of a lightly toasted bready smell with a big showing of molasses and some caramel. Along with these aromas comes some dark fruit of raisin and prune which are accompanied by some lighter notes of a grassy and grainy smell.
Taste – The taste begins with a bready roasted malt flavor with some flavors of molasses and caramel. The sweet flavors are lighter then I was anticipating from the nose, with the toasted bready flavor being the strongest and best represented by the nose. The sweetness increases a bit as the taste advances due to the caramel and molasses being joined by some raisin and cherry. A hay like flavor ends up developing more toward the end of the taste and with a little bit of a herbal hop, they end up bittering and balancing the sweeter and bready tastes rather well. In the end, with all the transitions of the flavor profile, one is left with a very malty, but not overly sweet taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is rather chewy with a carbonation level that is quite low. For the roasty and malty characteristics of the brew the feel is spot on and makes for a nice drinking doppel.
Overall – A roasty and not overly sweet, but quite malty doppel. While not one I really want to frequent all that often (although to be fair I don’t think I ever encountered a doppel I want to frequent “all that often”), it is certainly one you will want to try if you get a chance.

Pours a clear mahogany with a small head of off white foam that doesn't last long.
I get some grain, chocolate, and toffee with some rich caramel malt in the smell.
Malty and grainy taste with some good caramel notes that don't get too sweet. A bit of chocolate and toffee rounds out this well crafted Doppelbock.
Nice mouthfeel. .heck, everything is nice aboot this Red Lodge offering. Worthy of a repurchase.

Draft at Sam's when I passed through there a couple weeks ago... Pours a clear chestnut with a good khaki head... Nice clean dark toast and fairly rich maltiness.... Smooth and well rounded... Good doppelbock.

Had on tap @ The Copper Bar and Grill in the Bozeman, MT Airport
Appearance - Served up in a pint glass with a thin layer of broken suds. The brew is a deep ruby color with a brownish tinge.
Smell - Heavy toffee aroma with faint touches of chocolate and coffee roast.
Taste - Toffee is the predominant flavor here, though the coffee character cuts through the sweetness and adds a bit of balance. Hints of cocoa hit mid-taste. A hair of astringency in the finish.
Mouthfeel - On the heavier side of medium-bodied with moderate, lightly bitey carbonation. Semi-dry finish.
Overall - Pretty good doppelbock here. Not on the level of Ayinger Celebrator, but nothing is. Would drink again.
