Poured from a bomber into a snifter glass
Appearance – The beer pours a super dark brown color that boarders on black. Upon pouring there is a light brown colored head of one finger foam. The head fades rather fast to leave a little bit of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is big of a roasted and toasted malt smell mixed with some lighter coffee smells. The aroma of cocoa is heavy upfront, and as the brew warms in the glass, it gets even more potent in nature. As the brew warms more toward room temp, there is also an increase in some aromas of vanilla and crème as well as a touch of char leaving one with a rich roasty milk chocolate like aroma.
Taste – The taste begins with a robust roasted milk chocolate flavor that has big flavors of cocoa, roasted malt and vanilla. As the taste advances some other more dark flavors of char and toast come to the tongue. There is an increase in the sweetness as the taste advances with more vanilla sweetness and a touch of milkiness coming to the tongue, producing a more pronounced milk chocolate flavor. At the end a touch of hot booziness and a little bit of caramel and more roasted malt come to the tongue, leaving one with a rich milk chocolate and malty, lightly warming taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is thick and chewy with a carbonation level that is normal. The thick feel is great for all the big, rich, and sweet tastes of the brew, creating a thick and flavorful medium for the big flavors to be appreciated.
Overall – A rather rich and robust, chocolaty sweet imperial stout. Rather tasty and smooth, and while very sweet, not cloying in nature. Rather well done.
