Pours an effervescent copper/hazel with one finger of cream-colored head. Above average head retention

S: Some smokiness, jammy fruittyness, woody hop notes. Tons of toffee once warm

T: Follows the nose, a plenty dry, brown sugar & toastyness as well up front. Dryness, a little brown sugar, woody hops & toastyness dominate as this beer warms up. Finishes toasty, dry with leafy & woody hops, more brown sugar

MF: Medium body, moderate carbonation, a little warming

Decent take on the style, a little too aggressively hopped for a Scotch Ale. drinks easy

12oz canned 03/18/19 (3 months ago) poured into a tulip pint glass at fridge temp 6% ABV 24 IBU. The beer pours bright light brown with copper highlights and very light brown head. The head builds quickly on a hard pour and recedes slowly to a cap and leaves plenty of lacing. The aroma is faint with toasted bread and caramel. The taste is burnt sugar caramel and toasty malt with some earthy hops rolling in mid palate before a firm and moderately bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, adequately carbonated and mostly dry in the finish. Overall, very good. Not the most complex Scottish ale out there, but solid and well made.

Pours a chestnut brown with ruby highlights. The head is grey-beige with a fingernail remaining after the initial finger.

Aroma is a lot of hard toffee and caramel, with hints of peppery yeast, dry grain, and even slight chocolate.

The malts are rich and silky. A good amber and caramel malt presence, taking form of molasses candy and sarsaparilla, with a firm nuttiness, and slight cocoa powder. Negative remarks would be a slight metallic presence and slight sour acidity.

Feel is medium bodied, a bit slick, perhaps too slick for me, with moderate carbonation that wells up to a fault in the belly.

Overall, a decent scotch ale. I'd like to see this one bourbon barrel aged for 3 years.

From notes taken 03/13/16:

Mostly clear, dark copper. Fluffy, chunky, tan, mushrooming head. Superior retention, filmy, with layers and ringlets of fine lace. Aromas of yeast funk, grains or grass. Taste consists of caramel, tartness, light smoke, toast, tea, and bitter herbs. Well-attenuated for the style. Medium-bodied, tingly effervescence and then thick with softer suds.

Pours a clear, brown color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and good lacing. Smells of sweet malt, pale malt, slight caramel malt, yeast, slight smoke, and a hint of wood. Fits the style of a Scottish Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, slight smoke, pale malt, caramel malt, yeast, hint of alcohol, and a hint of wood/nut. Overall, good appearance, aroma, blend, body, and complexity.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours deep amber color with a little bit of burnt brown in there as well. Upon pouring there is a little bit of foam on the surface of the brew. This fades rather fast leaving just a hint of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a sweet caramel mixed with a little bit of toffee. Other lightly roasted bready smells are there as well, with these being mixed with some light scotch. A hint of a earthy smell rounds out the total giving a rather decent and robust scotch ale aroma overall.

Taste – The taste begins with a sweet and malty flavor with a lots of caramel and toffee and some other tastes of toasted bread. These tastes all create the base of the brew and all remain relatively strong throughout. There is however, even more sweet that comes to the tongue, more in the form of a butterscotch taste, all while a bit of scotch and some wood come to the tongue as well. With all the flavor transitions that have occurred throughout, one is left with a rather sweet and malty, lightly scotched taste to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and creamier side for a brew of 6 % abv with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. For the style it is very nice as it accentuates the lighter scotch and wood, and really allows all the more malty flavors of the brew to soak into the tongue.

Overall – A flavorful and rather tasty scotch ale that has a more drinkable abv. of 6 %. Big and sweet, but not so huge on the scotch booziness. Good overall.

It pours a deep reddish brown with a finger's worth of foam.

The nose is mild but I do get some caramel malt, grain, and a bit of fruit. And some smoke.

Overall, I get a mixed bag of sweet and bitter in the taste. The fruitiness is kind of weird but I like it. Slight smoke..more of it and that seems to turn me off the style so I'm glad it's slight.

Hmm...I really have very few of the style that I have a liking for and this one gets not so good reviews. Oh well.
