IPA - Imperial / Double New England /...

Michael S Buffum: Notes

Ultra smooth hit, piney citrus hop overload with a golden grains malt bill that adds wild depth in both flavor and Mouthfeel. Crazy citrus/pine/earthiness smack to the face. This thing is scary good.

A reviewers dilemma, where is this from, Easton PA, or North Haven, Connecticut? On this label, it's North Haven. Regardless, a pour to empty a pint can into a clear glass liter mug reveals that this is obviously barley malt deprived. It starts with a foamy stark white head atop an opaque dirty blond liquid. An aroma only of muddled hops is all that's there for the nose. The only redeeming character here is that it's hoppy from the onset. It's a sharp and dry hoppiness that bites like a well-aged cheese. Probably, that's aided by an alcoholic bite that's noticeable from the beginning. The body is acceptable, but not good, barely enough to carry these hops and alcohol. Scant glass lacing with a short-lived head, here's another great example of why barley malt should provide the base for an IPA. Great artwork on the label, regardless.

A - Pours a hazy golden orange with a thin creamy white head. Good amount of soapy lacing.

S - Aroma is grapefruit, pineapple and skunky hops.

T - The taste is orange, pineapple, papaya, grapefruit and earthy bitter hops.

M - Medium body with medium carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel with a crisp finish.

O -Really nice. ABV well hidden.

Hazy, fluffy dark golden pour from the 16oz can, moderate white head with small bubbles. The hop varietals all seem to pop in unique ways, there is that distinct zippy tropical note from the Citra and a big pungent punch of Nelson with white wine spritzer. Stone fruit, blood orange, papaya...delicious. Hops dominate but there is a sufficient malt base for sue. Really, really good.

Modest head production, but excellent retention and lacing. Opaque murk bomb, dark orange in hue.

Intensely herbal aroma, at first leaning dank along with tropical and citrus notes, but then sharply green, intimating pine, grass, and oregano.

Much sweeter on the palate, and thankfully so, due to the heavy malt base. The herbal hop accents are a nice added layer of complexity to an otherwise fairly straightforward imperial NE IPA. Tasting notes of papaya, white grape, melon, pineapple, lemon, grapefruit.

Smooth bodied with just enough bite.

Abomination is a tier below Tree House when it comes to NE-style IPAs, and this is a darn good example.
