Reviewed on 8/12/08. On tap at SPH. Pours a dark brown with no real head. Aroma of roast, roasted meats, and smoke. Flavor is surprisingly rich: rich sweet roasted malt. Some smoked meats too. Quite delicious, nice smooth palate. Very good.

Growler acquired in trade with beerbill (thanks!).
Poured a dark brown, almost black, color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of roast, caramel, and chocolate. Tastes of roast, chocolate, and had a light bitter coffee finish.

Growler shared by kp at the Brick Store.
Pours dark, dark brown with a tan head that lingers for a little while but leaves no lacing. The aroma is dominated by roasted malts and chocolate with the sweetness coming out even more as it warmed. The taste is heavier on the roasted malt side of things with a little chocolate and coffee in the there as well. The mouthfeel is very smooth with good carbonation. I enjoyed this one and it's a very good sessionable stout. Thanks again to kp for sharing this one.

After a few pours the growlered warmed and the head on this beer is just amazing. A huge, dense, chestnut colored head that faded slowly leaving strands of lace. Extremely mild aroma with a hint dark malt and an clean earthy smell like dirt or something. It's good weird, but I can't describe it for the life of maybe. Maybe it's oyster shell:-) This one is lightly carbonated with heavenly smooth mouthfeel. Flavors are mild, but not faint, and clean. Cocoa, coffee, a dash of caramel, and possibly a pinch of smoked malt all play together nicely. A 5% abv, super smooth, beer that has plenty of flavors to keep things interesting. I could drink this till the cows come in, or the growler runs dry.

The beer pours a deep, dark black color with a thick frothy tan head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a dry, yet malty scent that boasts of black, chocolate, and roasted malts. It has a chocolatey sweetness with a roasted edge. The taste is decent. It has a thin, black malt and roasted barley flavor that goes down easy and finishes earthy and dry with a bit of an aftertaste. The mouthfeel is decent also. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a pretty good beer, but below the high standards I have for Southampton beers.

This was the only beer I actually drank at the Southampton Publick House and I must admit my attentions were diverted towards conversations with my family. But I was able to jot down a few notes about this brew and wasnt terribly impressed with it on the whole.
The Oyster Stout was offered as a seasonal, and though its an odd choice to offer a stout in the summer, this particular brew was not too heavy or potent for warm weather. It can be characterized as having a fair measure of coffee in the nose and the taste though not any great abundance of excitement. It is jet black with little head or lace.
I was able to sample a total of seven Southampton beers, most of them bottled beers I took home with me, and the Oyster Stout proved to be the least inspiring. The body lacked sustain and the flavor lacked the subtleties of drier session stouts.

pours pretty much black as night with a thin bubbly tan head that has moderate stickiness to it. the smell is very nice. it's sort of a salty oatmeal stout smell in that there's a nice sweet base to it but it has a noticeable sea salt scent scattered throughout. malt and chocolate are noticeable as well. the flavour is very nice as well. dry throughout with a burnt wood tone to it. and a bittersweet chocolate finish. the flavour is not at all sweet like the smell, but moreso a touch salty. roasted malt is picked up here and there as well. though a tad thin for a stout, there's still a nice hearty body to this one and i found it to be incredibly easy drinking. i might not be able to stick with this one all night long, but it'd be a treat for 2 or 3 before moving onto something else. quite enjoyable.

On tap @ the Brazen head in Bklyn NY
Pours Black, with a dark tan puffy head. Leaves lots of lacing. Some floral hops in the nose. Roasted malts dominate, a distinct sourness emerges, and then the hops dry things out towards a long smooth finish. Body is fairly light. An interesting, differant stout.
