Poured from 750mL bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: rich golden hue with a strong effervescence. Head initially poured about three fingers thick; there's definitely some oomph to this one. Looks great.

Smell: sweet-ish malt with a little bit of fruity undertone. There also appears to be the slightest touch of noble hops coming through -- I like it.

Taste: malty with a fair dose of booziness. It's got sweetness as well, but the booze drowns it out a little. There's bitterness, but it's low.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and a big creaminess.

Overall: this beer's good, but I want to like it more than I do. I think a certain amount of booziness is appropriate in the style, but this is just a skosh too hot for me.

Pours a very hazy amber color. Huge white head which lingers. Typical Belgian taste with the yeast leading the way. Mouthfeel is medium. Very well done golden Belgian.

This seemed like a good choice for my 4,000th review. So much time spent pecking out comments on good, bad, and mediocre malty concoctions. I hope this certifies me as a harmless crank.

But the Golden Pelican is sweet luxury in a bottle. Beautiful pour in the Kasteel chalice with suds slowly and gently overflowing the glass. Big creamy mouthful. Sweet, fruity, and yeasty. Mellow grain, sweet pears, and something like citron. There's a scratchy sharp edge with a bitter finish like candied grapefruit.

Overall an excellent interpretation of the Belgian styles. Highly flavorful with a nice balance of sugar and yeasty bitterness. From the 750 ml bottle purchased at Railroad Market in Burlington, Washington.
