This is the 2022 edition. Very dark but clear amber brown with plenty of foam in the snifter. Interesting sourish note-- what is this, a wild yeast Scotch Ale? Pleasant complex aroma that does have that wild yeast note. Woody taste with a boozy finish. Some sweetness and fruity flavors but damped by the sourness. This doesn't taste Belgian but it's reminiscent of the blended lambic brews, but with the sugar and smoke of the Scotch Ale. All quite interesting. From the bottle downsized to 500 ml. Purchased in northwest Washington.

Tawny, dirty brown body, opaque in the glass; thin, patchy, light khaki colored head. Faint aroma; light roasted grains; a smidgen of whiskey. Strange taste; raisins and red wine; no significant malt or whiskey flavors. Medium-heavy body; fairly smooth; slightly tart; rather astringent as the beer opens up.

A little sour tasting overall and nothing like a wee heavy let alone with wheated whiskey barrel connotations. The bottle label notes of chocolate covered cherries in the aroma (!?) but not in the taste. For taste, they trumpet malted milk balls and crème brûlée with the mouthfeel being silky. Sorry, there is none of this in the beer I'm drinking. I don't know what happened, but this beer doesn't strike me as any kind of wee heavy. It has more of a thin, watery aspect with strong notes of red wine or sherry barrel aging.

rich maty ale in the scotch style - first beer from this brewery hope to get more fropm then great malt taste thru the whole drink

Dark brown, quickly dissipating head. Smell and taste are both sweet on the forefront with notes of fig, chocolate, cherry, toffee, then some coffee and slight whiskey on the undercurrent. Medium bodied, slight mouth watering finish, subtle booze presence.

 

Lighter brown somewhat murky pour with a tan thin cap. Fig is the clear star in both the smell and taste. In the nose it is joined by toffee, big boozy whiskey, toasted oak and slight smoke. Taste starts with fig, raisin, dark cherry, oak and toffee, then pleasant peated earth before a tsunami of destruction made of hot booze and smokes ruins it all, leaving the aftermath to be hyper sweet boozy malt. Too thin and unbalanced to last on the palate, malt and booze are the lasting impressions here too

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a light brown, but quite murky. Some off-white head. The nose is toffee, rye, wheat, oak, tobacco, bourbon. Reminds me a lot of Wulver!

The taste is interesting. Definitely quite different from Wulver and other Scotch ales when it comes to the taste. Hops come through here. Almost a red wine taste. Toffee, plums, figs, whiskey. Maybe this is just a bit off on the flavor. I wonder if this batch turned south?

 

 

L: Purple brown, nice soapy head.
S: Sweet. Raisin, brown sugar, apple, spice, vanilla, and a bit of whisky.
T: Upfront, brown sugar and raisin mostly. Honey in the body, with a big kick of whisky and figs, then hints of spice and hops.
F: Warm and smooth.
O: Yet again, pelican knocks it out of the park with one of their specialty brews. The balance of honey and whisky is phenomenal.

2017 Vintage
22oz bottle poured into a tulip

A- pours brown in color with a ruby hue and a one-finger light khaki colored head that reduces to leave nothing behind

S- Dark fruits up front with aromas of raisin & fig, along with cherries, tobacco and leather. Just a hint of oaky undertones

T- the barrel note is noticed immediately and surprisingly has a wheated bourbon distinction. Notes if cherry compliment the oak and is reminiscent of a Manhattan cocktail. Undertones of fig & raisin, as well as caramel. The finish gives more barrel character, as well as caramel and cherry

M- medium body with moderate-low carbonation leads to a slightly foamy mouthfeel and a warming finish

O- I believe this is my first wheated bourbon barrel aged beer and it’s definitely a noticeable difference.

 

Bottle from Albertsons. Pours out a nice mahogany with ruby tinges. Airy head fades fast. Whiskey, brown sugar and earthy notes. Taste is even more robust, more booze, alcohol warmth, sweet and syrupy. Scottish ale on steroids.

 

 

 

 

 

My only other experience with Pelican is their Mother of All Storms barleywine, which I adore and hold in very high regard. Captain of the Coast indicates to me that they are not a one-trick pony with their barrel-ageing program. The Captain is, however, a much brighter, fruitier experience, with cherry cordials and malty sweetness coming forward over a slight tartness. Good whiskey and barrel notes. I'd be happy to revisit another bottle of this with some age on it to see how it evolves.
