Mexican-Style Chocolate Stout

Lone Pelican Series: Like the lone pelican flying independently from the flock, this small batch series flies in the face of convention. Our Lone Pelican Series takes traditional beer styles and ingredients and reimagines them to demonstrate the vast spectrum of flavor experiences possible in this wonderful beverage.

This chocolate stout is inspired by Champurrado, a classic Mexican hot drink made with chocolate, corn and milk. Robust chocolate flavors with hints of spice come from Tanzanian cacao nibs and Indonesian cinnamon sticks. Abuela's Casita uses the traditional Champurrado ingredients of corn and lactose to add depth of flavor and to round out the palate. A staple drink made during the winter, we offer this treat to warm up your winter nights, just like Abuela does.

Rich Cocoa Aroma and Flavor * Subtle Hints of Cinnamon * Full-Bodied * Creamy Finish

A wonderful dark brown beer, nicely spiced and easy to drink. The smooth and creamy body with a balanced roasted character make this a great winter warmer. Salud!

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a half finger dark khaki head with great retention and nice lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, rich cocoa, lactose and mild cinnamon. Flavor follows with dark, lightly toasted malt, Mexican chocolate with a light, but distinct touch of cinnamon, lightly milky. Finishes with lingering cinnamon cocoa. Medium bodied with only slight creaminess. Really delivers what it promises, with a clear Mexican chocolate milk flavor supported by a laid back, but stout level dark malt. The body could use a little more depth; as much as I liked the flavor, I hoped for a little more thickness in the mouth feel. Still a nicely done stout with well balanced flavors and great cinnamon cocoa character. Haven't had anything from Pelican for a while, and reminded how they brew everything so well.
