Compared to the Pelican marketing copy on the bottle, this beer was pretty much a let-down. It looks OK, dark reddish brown, but no head to speak of. The smell is mild cocoa and some dark fruit. The taste is disappointing, a kind of thin cocoa with a bit of fruity tang. The advertised ancho chiles are almost non existent, with just a slight tangy spice on the finish. It tastes like going into a Mexican restaurant that has watered down all its recipes for fear of offending gringo taste buds. The mouthfeel is watery. Overall, it was OK, not a drain pour at all, but just a big disappointment.
