cool to have a few from this new to me brewery, this is neat to see, i love american breweries taking swings at belgian styles, and this is a somewhat unique take in that it does have the grain richness and flavor depth of the style proper, but it also has some surprising astringency that leans almost sour on the finish, beyond tannic to almost bacterial in how it presents, which easily cuts through the sweeter front half of this, not sure this element belongs, but i dont dislike the beer anyway, and appreciate its palate originality. slight haziness in this mahogany colored brew that sports a nearly belgian looking inch plus of lasting tan foam, carbonation of the actual liquid is just okay, but it looks lovely. aroma has some neat spicy notes from the yeast, anise and clove, some raisin and date type malt and candy sugar sweetness together, a little alcohol is appreciable, some earthy tobacco character, toast, brown sugar, and subtle woodiness even, quite complex, some tannins in play, autumnal vibes. the flavor starts off about the same, i like the yeast and grain together, a cola note to it somehow, like a cool middle spice and nutty complexion, not too heavy but with the classic abbey malt type richness, right on for a dubbel, but about half way though and then ramping up through the swallow an acidity starts and builds, at first its kind of neat, highlights some of the fruity nuance in the grain, but it ends up souring the whole thing a little bit and reading almost like a young infection, its too much, and it breaks down the depth and richness earlier established, could be a temperature thing not a bacterial one, but its off for me, and it cheapens the whole thing a little bit, turns it more amateurish than it starts. overall not bad, clean the late pucker up and its a solid american take on the style...
