Quiet Rye-It

A: Pours what initially appears to be an opaque black with a creamy, thick beige head, but when held up to the light, the beer is actually a dark, murky amber.

S: Aromas of coffee beans, dark chocolate, roasted grain, and rye bread are present on the nose.

T: Notes of rye, black pepper, dark chocolate, vanilla, cream, roasted grain, coffee, and earthy hops wash across the palate. The finish is earthy and grainy with rye bread, roasted grain, coffee, and dark chocolate flavors.

M: Medium-bodied, firm, and very dry. Carbonation is rather lively, but not overpowering.

O: This is a really solid porter. The use of rye results in a very dry beer, but the active carbonation keeps it from being chalky. Great smell and a nice combination of flavors here. One of Against the Grain's best.

Well, as long as it's quiet... This stuff pours a deep blackish-brown, highlighted in russet, topped by a finger of tan foam. The nose comprises cocoa powder, light roasted malts, blackened pretzels, cinnamon, and clove. The taste holds notes of burnt cinnamon, toast, light acrid coffee, clove, and a pinch of cocoa. It's an interesting combination of flavors, but it generally works. The body is a light-ish medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a decidedly dry finish. Overall, a nice rye porter, something I think we should see more of in the future.
