Enjoyed this on tap at Against the Grain in Louisville KY in a 4oz sample glass.

A - Dark Brown, small amounts of light pass through, zero head, zero lacing

S - coffee, woody and nutty

T - initial: coffee, chocolate, carmel. finish: roast coffee (3/10), minimal smoke

M - med/full body, frothy, almost creamy

O - Appearance was barely average. That be ing said, was a descent representation of style. balanced nutty, coffee and carmel- liked the touch of roast. Creaminess held it together.

Built upon a strong coffee foundation, copious amounts of fresh ground coffee penetrate the common chocolate, and already-coffee taste of Robust Porter. The results are unmistakably "beyond valudome."

Chocolate-brown in color, the beer pours with a murky "chocolate milk" haze. Opaque to the eye, the beer builds a delicate creme-like head that soon dissolves back in to the beer, leaving minimal lace behind. It simply looks as much like coffee as it does ale.

Strong coffee aromas rise to greet the nose, but stop with the character of nutty Columbian blend and not pushing into the world of French press or espresso. A subtle backdrop of chocolate, walnuts, burnt caramel, and earthen root-like character and damp soil.

And the strong flavor of coffee also take the headlines in taste. Although the Porter flavor provides the sturdy framework for base flavor, the ale is softer and more chocolaty- seemingly of a bolder English Brown Ale than Porter. But the shadowy cast of coffee dominate all other tastes- again, not espresso or bold roast varieties, but the soft nutty taste of "Breakfast Blend" and "Kona" is creamy, earthy, and lightly bitter in its finish.

Medium bodied throughout, the beer is silky, creamy, and smooth like a full bodied coffee, but with mild embedded malt sweetness and tightly woven carbonation. Closing with a texture of heavy cream, the beer warms slightly and allows mild coffee-like astringency to crispen the beer as it finishes.

It's easy to be tempted to make a big Stout with espresso added, but this Porter and Maxwell House coffee combo shows a sense of delicacy and finesse in both recipe formulation and brewery execution. Drinkable enough for mild quenching and quick consumption- its strength suggests otherwise.
