Got this can for free at the Asahi Beergarten in Sapporo! Not everyday you don't pay for beer in Japan!!
The back of the can talks about what a tight balance is created between the hops and the yeast to make this a perfectly balanced beer that's very drinkable. They don't mention the malt -- because there is none in this one, opting instead for soy beans and sugar and caramel coloring. These are the most sinister of the happoshus.
Looks like beer, light gold in color, but other than a quick burst of fizz, completely lacks head retention, or creation. Nose is heavily neutral, which is a positive characteristic for happoshu. Taste is sharp and artificial, neutral as well in the mouth (balanced?) until the raw taste of alcohol cuts through at the end. Not sweet at all, however, and one of the better efforts of this sort of futuristic artificial beer. Intense carbonation definitely the way to go on this style.

as i enter my 15th happoshu review, i find myself wondering - is this advocating beer? does this style, and the people who choose to drink it, respect beer?
ginger ale has been mentioned in many of my reviews, but this has to be the most soda-like of all. the smell is bad, but at least its not too strong. sharp and sour is how i would describe this odor. ugh. the taste is even worse. my first thought is, mountain dew: code bile. i dont think this is as bad as the dreaded draft one, (which ironically is the only beer to get all ones from me) but it is pretty awful.
so... does asahi respect beer by making and selling this happoshu they called gubinama? do i respect beer by buying and drinking it? no, not really. it's barely beer. but if a fellow BA is in japan, wants to try what japan has to offer - rice lagers, craft beer as well as happoshu, i hope i can be of some help by offering this advice ... AVOID
