Petrus Aged Pale is a 100% beer from our foeders. Michael Jackson, the beer hunter, chose the name in the late 1990s – and he was the first to sell this beer in his beer clubs. Today, it is still the reference for sour beers in the US. Petrus Aged Pale has won multiple gold medals in beer competitions worldwide. Moreover, ever since the start of the brewery, the beer has been used as a blending-beer with other beers to give them fresh, slightly sour flavors and aromas.

Aged in Oak foeders for over 24 months

Bottle 0.33L.
Clear amber body with a large, creamy, off-white head, mostly lasting with nice lacing; high density of tiny particles.
Moderate yeasty (straw, leather) and malty (biscuit, caramel), light-to-moderate hoppy (flowers, orange) aroma with notes of wine/vinegar, honey, spices and fruits (apricot).
Moderate sweet flavour with light-to-moderate tartness and light bitterish note; long-lasting sweet finish with a strong winy character.
Medium body with oily texture; soft carbonation.
Complex and pleasant beer!

11.2 oz bottle

Pours clear bright amber reddish orange with a dense creamy white foam head. Smells real wild and tart, phenolic, funky, herbal, vinegary, with notes of toasty hay, straw, barnyard, peppery spice, dusty oak foeder, hints of leather, some light caramelized bready grainy malts, honey, dried fruit, apricot, acidic lemon, orange citrus, and floral earthy grassy herbal hops. Tastes pretty tart and acetic with notes of vanilla, straw, toasted hay, dusty woody oak, seedy multigrain, light caramelized bready grainy malts, honey, mild toffee, dried fruit, dates, apricot, orange citrus, acidic lemon, sweet vinegar, a touch of barnyard, peppery baking spice, hints of leather, and floral earthy grassy herbal hops. Feels medium bodied, creamy with moderate smooth carbonation. Overall a nice and interesting aged pale sour Belgian foederbeer.

Copenhagen 29/6 2017. 33 cl bottle from Fakta. Label is rich in text telling me all about this beers life in a foeder and that this is the "mother beer" and sour as hell.

Pours slightly hazy pale yellow with small white bubbly head. Settles as white patch in the middle of the glass.

Aroma actually is sour as hell. Sharp, almost chemical sourness bordering on the acidic. Kind of reminds me of acetone - in a good way.

Soft carbonation and medium thick palate.

Flavor has very subdued sweetness quickly overcome by massive sourness. Aftertaste has intense sourness and vinegar.

Austere and consequent. Or to quote the motion picture Alien: "It’s structural perfection is matched only by it’s hostility"-

Poured into a Pilsner glass. Beer has a 1/4" white head, good lacing, a medium amber/gold translucent look with artifacts in the beer. Scent is definitely sour, with hops, yeast, and Brett coming out. Taste is of course sour, as in sour apple and bites at first but becomes mellow thru the mouthful. Beer is medium carbonated, and finished with a slight sour aftertaste and slightly sticky.

This is a pleasant sour beer, it is not overly sour but enjoyable.

From a 11.2 oz bottle. Not sure, but I think the date on the bottle is the 71st day of 2023.

It looked somewhat clear till I poured rverything into the bottle. It has a murky dark golden color to it. There's a 1 finger white head to this beer that has good head retention. There's some clingy looking lacing on the glass as the head dissipates.
There's a nice sharp tartness to this beer I got while pouring it. Up close it is quite intense and pleasing. Nice tart fruit aroma. There's a nice earthy part to the aroma that is pleasing.
Taste - There's a nice sour tartness to this beer This hits right away, but isn't overpowering. It has a slight pucker factor to it. There's hints of the malts and grains that seem to be missing from a lot of beers that have this flavor profile. I get a hint of cereal in this beer and it's a nice add on to the sour/tartness that hits on the backside as the tart/sour mellows. I also get a hint of a honey like sweetness in this part as well.
Very nice feeling beer. Very full bodied. There's a bit of a bubbly feeling to it. The feeling of the tart/sour does linger in my throat.
Wow, this is a delicious beer and I am glad I got to try it. Delicious, and I'd drink again.

Appearance: Hazy light brown in color, with a small, but persistent white head, with thin, fine-beaded glass coating lace.

Aroma: A sharply sour, acidic note presents, with lemon rind, horse blanket, and grassy and herbal notes. Interestingly, the ABV of 7.3 percent is utterly absent in the aroma.

Taste: The taste opens with mild sour notes, with hints of lemon and vinegar, less than the aroma would lead one to expect. As with the aroma, the ABV of 7.3 percent is well disguised, offering only a mild warmth. As the taste progresses, the sour notes and rustic flavors vie for ascendency. The lemony sour notes win out, with the rustic notes as a backdrop.

Mouth feel: Soft, full and pleasant, with delicate carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: A challenging beer to review, as it turns our expectations on their head. Still, quite wonderful and a "must try". I would think this would be a fine offering at Thanksgiving, to be served with the main course.

Presentation: Packaged in an eleven point two ounce brown glass Euro-style longneck bottle, sealed with a pry-off crown, served in a South American-style Pilsener glass.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into cervoise.
A: Pours a dark clear orange hue with extremely active carbonation jets fueling a 1-2 inch frothy/rocky white head with excellent retention.
S: Sour lemon, soft oak, earthy spice, and hints of farmhouse funk and herbal grass.
T: Sour lemon hits first quickly followed by a tempering soft oak note, earthy spice with a touch of white pepper, herbal and floral notes, and finishes with farmhouse funk and more soft oak.
M: Light medium body. Very sour with some tartness. Light floral sweet with strong farmhouse funk. Dry throughout. Soft feel.
D: Excellent for style. Expertly crafted oak aged sour ale. Excellent foeder notes. Simply lovely on its own and also pairs amazingly well with food.

poured from a 750mL corked and caged bottle into a SP lambic glass. pours a cloudy orange with two fingers of firm white foam head. almost has an apple cider look to it at first but gets better as i pour through the bottle. dry oak, sour lemons, funky blue cheese-like aged hops all on the nose and in the taste. medium-full mouthfeel with a prickly carbonation and a dry finish. not bad. gets really sour as it warms. pretty solid though. even if it is on the more extreme sour side.

330ml can into a teku. Best I can tell, was canned September 2022, so almost a year in the can on top of 2 years in a foeder.

Decent look, hazy pale yellow body, persistent head, streaks of lacing. Full aroma, slightly funky and yeasty. Sour and slightly tart taste with a side of funk. Quite drying in the finish. Nice enough drink, happy to have another 5 cans in reserve.

November 1, 2025: Tried this with Sour Punch Monster Melon and OH MY GOD this does NOT pair well.. The beer overpowers the sour punch and you cannot get a hint of it AT ALL. It is also way too sour, I could smell it from across the table..
