Petrus Sour Passion Fruit

Not as distinctive as lambic but not as sterile as kettle sour ale either, de Brabandere brewers give their tart and acetic pale ale a fruity upgrade with the irresistible fruit of passion.

Petrus Sour Passion Fruit pours with a foggy golden appearance while shedding a dainty and scattered foam that plays host to a sharp, tropical, fruity, juicy scent laced with the faintest of woodsy must. Gentle sweetness bounces on the palate with a brisk sourdough, candied and fructose character that proves to be fast fleeting. A juicy taste of passionfruit follows and is propped up with an undercurrent of lime, crabapple, lemon, gooseberry and bracing acidity. An acutely sour finish provides balance for any linger of sweetness as the acidity dominates in dry fashion.

Light, crisp and refreshing, the off-clean ale shares some subtle lambic qualities but is brightened with the passionfruit additions and gives sour ale lovers the beer that they bolt love and deserve.

 

 

Draft pour at Lures Bar & Grille. I was looking forward to this beer, as I'm a fan of the base beer and LOVE passionfruit. Unfortunately, it was a big disappointment because the beer is more sweet than sour, with very little actual passionfruit flavor. Not terrible, but not anything like what I was anticipating. Maybe it was an old keg. I'd try this again, hoping for a different experience.

The passionfruit doesn't come forward much, but it's a terrific well balanced sour ale.

Draft at Yard House in Las Vegas. Appears the exact color of apple cider vinegar with a firmly white and pronounced head. Heavy lactic notes with some vinegar after taste. Tart and clearly sour, and a heavy lambic character. In all honesty there isn't any discernible passion fruit notes here, but fans of tart sours and lambics would not be disappointed either way. Passion fruit fans may be disappointed, however, as it seems to lack some of the passion fruit juice aroma so common and forward in other sours. Upon finishing this beer the color becomes more clear, and a spicy character enveloped my throat. Good, but very tart.

 

 

some of thee variants come and go and you can easily miss them if you dont know where to look. i feel thankful to have sourced this, and really enjoyed it, even if it seem like its been sitting a little while, tons of flavor, a familiar and complex sour base, not too vinegar forward, and with just enough natural passion fruit character for this to be modern at the same time that its very classic, old and new worlds coming together in a rather drinkable sour. pale orange in color, a little thin in body but with a short and lasting white head from the tap, just short of perfectly clear. the aroma is piquant with some lemon, orange, and white wine elements to it, a hit of fading pale malt and oxidation, earthy minerals, oak tannins, and lactic pucker. the flavor is all of this, not too much passion fruit, but it is identifiable. i like it being authentic and more tangy than sweet in this, almost all of it in the finish. the beer is sharp but not caustic, and the high carbonation helps keep it from being too much, there is an underlying woody sort of mellow layer here to that brings some balance. overall i thought this was quite good, unexpected, but it seems like these guys have been doing more and more flavored stuff in recent years. a cool one to find on tap, hoping to score a few more variants of this classic sour pale!

Both the aroma and the flavor are a bit funky. The aroma suggests high tartness which the very fruity flavor delivers.
Medium body and medium high carbonation.
