Released as part of a fruited mixed pack, de Brabandere brewers give their tart pale ale a series of facelifts, starting with hibiscus and passionfruit for a unique spin on a classic.
Pouring a pale and foggy golden hue, Petrus Hibiscus Passion Fruit uses the tangy tropical fruit and the herbal spice to give the scent a succulent fruity, floral and tart interplay to hover over a short statured white froth. Light in sweetness, the likeness of wafer, sourdough and a hint of honeysuckle sweetness greets the tongue. Underlying flavors of lime, lemon, green apple, white grape and gooseberry wait in anticipation for the passionfruit to drive the session into a more tropical direction. Balanced with a brisk acidity, the finish is decidedly tart with the floral spice of hibiscus only adding to the peppery twang.
Light, crisp and refreshing, the session finishes with a tropic must and a suggestion of dry burlap in aftertaste. The passionfruit definitely adds an upgrade to the original while showing that imagination and relevancy is alive and well at the Braband brewery.
