Showing that the classics still have imagination and relevancy, the brewers at de Brabandere give their classic and sour pale ale a makeover with mango and pineapple for a distinctive tropical kick.
Belgium meets paradise with Petrus Mango PIneapple, a tart ale starting off with a golden fog and a faint white cap before a seductive scent of tropical fruit and underlying vinous, cidery and citrusy aromas. Scantly sweet, notions of sourdough, wafer and powdered sugar coat the early palate while a brisk acidity of green apple, lemon and lime soon follow to balance the middle palate. A juicy fruit addition of mango and pineapple seem nearly soda-like in character and nearly erase the sour balance that the classic ale wants to achieve. A finish of tropical fruit leave lasting soda sweetness on the after palate.
Medium bodied, tart and playfully fruity, this mango and pineapple version isn't necessarily an upgrade but is a sweeter and fruitier version for those adverse to the acidity.
