Wow check it out, a beer made in substantial volume that hasn't been added to the database. Used to crush 12 packs of Weinhards just as much as BMC or Sierra Nevada in the mid/late 90s.
When I was first transitioning from BMC, Weinhard's filled a good crossover niche. The lager, the ice ale, the ale, the porter, the blackberry wheat. . . By contemporary standards, this is a relatively weak porter. It was basically a competitor to Pete's Wicked Ale level of straddling between a brown ale and a session porter. Did produce a good sized cream colored head almost a full 1". Aroma was, alongside Sam Smith Nut Brown, the first foray into nutty, fall like roasted malt.
Taste was chewy for its time, more bitter than what I was used to. Did help me get over thinking Sierra Nevada Porter was "gross". It offered a little more than Pete's did, was just bigger and chewier, helping me to transition from brown ale to porter, a tad bigger and better. Perhaps a tad sweeter than your average porter these days.
