Brown pour, darker, but the viscosity is probably lighter than most. Real thin head vanishes.

The smell is a different one, lagery nuts and brown malt with some peatiness.

Taste is a toffee/caramel affair with lots of carbonation in the mouthfeel. The roasted malt gives it color, but its not like a heavy stout or porter style of a beer. Bitterness is pretty high, they long boil some C hops in this one.

Used to throw these down back in the 90s. When you through Oregon, you find all the old varieties that used to make it to CA/NV.

Mild brown pour, really didn't look as intimidating as it used to. Thin head, dissipates rather quickly. Mild cocao and caramel notes, makes it smell a little different than the usual macro beer smell of private reserve.

Taste, a little caramel still, enjoyable, the body isn't as hefty as it seemed when I was a wee teenager. Its still pretty easy drinking, the carbonation is high, but not as high as their lighter offerings. I think this was the predecessor to Guinness's Black Lager. They are pretty similar beers. Most of the dark appearance here is just that, appearance. But then again, a little caramel and chocolate malt go a long way when added to a AAL type of beer.

Behold, our dark lager. It tastes nothing like the Private Reserve. We swear! See that label, its a totally different color. See, it pours a darker gold than the other one. No, the beer does not look and taste the same. The aroma is not corn meal, peanut oil, and mineral water. The taste is not bitter wood, stale malt, and fake caramel additive. See, right here, the label explicitly states this is a "Dark Lager." ITS A DARK LAGER, can't you read? I don't care what BeerAdvocate says it is.

I remember not really knowing what beer style this was back in the day, but finding it interesting. Had it again recently. Still interesting. Not sure if it's a porter, though.

Pours a cola brown. Off-white head. Sweet caramel melt and a hint of chocolate. No very strong flavors, but very drinkable.

Maybe the best of the Weinhard brews.
